Presentation of the program

Belarusian Children's Hospice is working in Gomel since February 2010. Gomel program was was organized on the basis of branch number 3 of the city central Gomel children's clinic. Since that time specialists of the Gomel program has supported more than thirty families with children with serious illnesses.

Currently, we plan to further develop the system of family support at home, easing the life of the children in life-threatening condition. This work was conducted within the project «Strengthening of outpatient systems of palliative support families with children in a terminal condition and OPFR in Gomel», which is implemented in close collaboration with the Children's clinic since March, 2011. Currently, we have been able to expand staff and to include a nurse to the team. Thus, the families of seriously ill children in Gomel can count on the help them of the experienced team of three nurses, a pediatrician and psychologist at home.

Within this project we plan to hold seminars to improve the skills of health workers in the field of children's palliative care services, to share the experiences, to teach parents methods of child care at home, to hold a round table, to develop and publish a glossary concerning children's palliative care services, to hold open days, to disseminate information on palliative services for families through the media and our website, to improve the equipment, to provide specialists of the Gomel team by the consumable medical supplies.

One of such seminars, «Fundamentals of Palliative Care for Children» was held in Gomel on May 13, 2011. The seminar included information on the principles and standards for children's palliative care, models of providing support and practical questions on palliative care for children at home. This subject has attracted the attention of medical personnel and psychologists from clinics? 3,? 5, and the orphanage in Gomel.

The project is funded by the Department of Information, Education and Culture of the U. S. Embassy in Minsk. In addition, the program is supported by the Foundation «Help the Children of Chernobyl» (The UK).
